Art, Propaganda and Resistance: ‘Self-Determination – A Global Perspective’

Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin
Elephant Magazine‘Self-Determination’, a core principle of the post-1945 international legal order – defined as the right of peoples to freely determine their political status and enshrined in Article 1 of the UN Charter – might seem an inapt and unusual title for an art exhibition. It has a legalistic specificity, which seems somewhat out of place in a gallery. However, this seemingly unusual choice serves to underscore the multifaceted intersections between legal and artistic realms, challenging conventional boundaries and prompting a reevaluation of the ways in which legal concepts manifest within the context of art and culture.

Sonia Boyce on the Political Sounds and Symbols of “Bella Ciao”
Elephant Magazine“Bella Ciao” has long since transcended its context as the de facto anthem of the partisans of the Italian Resistance in World War II. It has been sung and adapted (and sometimes rewritten) by activists, trade unionists, and antifascists throughout the world, a universal protest anthem and a marker of antifascist political identity. In Sonia Boyce’s Benevolence at the Sala delle Capriate in the Palazzo della Ragione, in the heart of the old town of Bergamo, “Bella Ciao” echoes throughout the former courtroom, while six screens play a ten-minute looping video of three singers performing the piece in Bergamo’s main piazza.

Alexandra Bachzetsis: RUSH(ES) Performance at The Hellenic Centre, London
Art Monthly The choice of the Greek-Swiss artist Alexandra Bachzetsis to perform at the Hellenic Centre reads as a contemporary reflection on the ancient Greek understanding of orchestra, where the orchestris (female dancers) performed for elite male symposia; this work playfully pushes back at these boundaries.

	Interview with Carment Winant
My Mother and EyeAnOther Magazine“At 18, I never saw my mother as anything but my mother. I didn’t think of her as a young woman with her own history, her own struggles,” artist Carmen Winant says. “I hadn’t even realised she took a road trip at my age. That awareness only comes later, when you start to see yourself in the past she lived.” I’m speaking with Winant from her home and studio in Ohio over Zoom. We are discussing her latest project, My Mother and Eye, a series of collaged photographs displayed across 300 JCDecaux bus shelters in New York, Chicago, and Boston. Drawing from archival images taken during her mother’s cross-country road trip across the States in 1969 and Winant’s own road-trip at 17, the project layers two histories into a single visual dialogue.

10 visionary jewellery designers to know now

Wallpaper*From London to Lahore, New York, Paris, Milan, and Cornwall, some of today's most visionary jewellery designers are deeply attuned to the landscapes around them. Whether translating street signs, folkloric symbols, or everyday objects into elaborate and detailed design forms or using textured surfaces sourced from their immediate surroundings, they employ techniques that range from hand-carved wax and woven silver to pressed pennies and repurposed machinery. Each designer works with metal, stone, and found objects to create pieces that are at once delicate and boldly modern, drawing on a rich seam of references from design and art history, to cinema and costume.

Metroland Cultures is an artist community housed in a former NHS health clinic and disused council building in Kilburn, providing free studio space and support enabling artists to sustain their creative practices despite the pressures of London’s increasing property prices, shrinking studio spaces, and funding cuts.In the programme, Sofia speaks with Linett Kamala known as Notting Hill Carnival’s ‘Sound System Queen’; artist Francesca Telling ; the collective Other Cinemas led by Arwa Aburawa and Turab Shah which supports Black and non-white filmmakers; and Tom James whose project Absolute Beginners teaches young people to create practical, sustainable products. Insights are also shared by Lizzie Graham, programme curator; Louise Shelley, deputy director; and Christy O'Beirne, assistant curator. Our conversations explore the significance of working in a space once dedicated to care, Brent’s history of community resistance such as the 1970s Grunwick strikes, and the cultural power of music.Listen back on: https://radio.montezpress.com/#/show/3659

Linder Sterling at Hayward GalleryAn exhibition walk through with punk queen Linder inside her retrospective, ‘Linder: Danger Came Smiling’, at Hayward Gallery in London

Linder Sterling has spent decades challenging norms, disrupting societal expectations, and reshaping feminist discourse through her provocative and multifaceted artistic practice. From her roots in the 1970s Manchester punk scene to her photomontages, performance, music, and fashion, Linder’s work continues to provoke thought and critique societal constructs around gender, identity, and representation. In this programme, Linder will walk listeners through her largest retrospective to date at the Hayward Gallery in London, Danger Came Smiling. The exhibition spans 50 years of work, exploring the evolution of pornography, the interplay between feminism and glamour, the impact of AI on art, and her experiments with deep fakes, as well as her punk origins and The Hayward’s brutalist architecture as the ideal stage for her work. With anecdotes from her career and insights into her future work, this program is both a celebration and a critique of glamour, art, and the worlds they inhabit.

Porous CitiesSouth Parade at Feria, Marseille Organised by Sofia Hallström 30 August - 9 September 2023 32 Rue du Baignoir, Marseille, 13001 Waj Hussain, Luca Longhi, Elijah Maja, Ryder Morey-Weale, SAGG Napoli, REDEYE, Sofia Hallström & Camille Yvert “...streets are the dwelling place of the collective. The collective is an eternally unquiet, eternally agitated being that–in the space between the building fronts–experiences, learns, understands, and invents.” – Walter Benjamin “The porous city is a city in which nothing moves forward on straight lines, through ruptures.” – Massimo Cacciari Accompanying its participation in Marseille’s Art-O-Rama, South Parade presents Porous Cities at Feria; an exchange between London and Marseille. We tend to categorise aspects of life and society: night and day, housing and work, reproduction and production. Cities mirror these divisions, often lacking transitional spaces, marked by zones and fixed boundaries. In the 20th century, Walter Benjamin extensively explored urban loneliness and disconnection. Yet, he also saw cities as experimental, providing insights into improved lifestyles. Referencing cities like Marseille, Moscow, and Naples as "dispersed, porous, commingled" sites, he highlighted their capacity for unexpected or surprising connections. Urban transitional spaces—caves, courtyards, arcades—fuelled idea-sharing, cultural exchange, and community bonding. Using Benjamin’s writing as a departure point, this exhibition draws together artists who explore the city – community, ritual and history — through process, material and subject. Camille Yvert’s sound and text work uses the car as a symbol to bridge technology and emotion. A second skin; a utopian extension of our anatomy, it is intertwined with global mobility. Elijah Maja explores the pace of a city, of a landscape, of speech. His interest in call and response as a technology for inquiry, encounter and memory is central to his sound and moving image work. In a similar vein, patterns in human communication is a point of departure for SAGG Napoli. Playfully tongue-and-cheek, her focus on Italy’s internal colonialism introduces complex questions in her work, which she confronts through a feminist lens. Ryder Morey-Weale takes from his immediate surroundings. Using salvaged cardboard and other discarded materials, his free-standing and wall based works are speckled with naturalised moths and dried plants, a reminder of humans’ intertwined relationship with nature. Sofia Hallström draws from images, objects, and motifs from a wide range of historical moments and contexts; within them she explores the frictions between public and private space. Luca Longhi's archival approach captures overlooked spaces—kitchens, cafes, construction sites—melding symbols with architectural details, unravelling their interconnected signs and layers. Collage, layered symbols and signs are similarly explored in Waj Hussain’s work. Engaging in the 'cut-up' technique using text from gay magazines, his work adds a playful challenge to conventional gallery norms. Extending out of the gallery space, REDEYE plays a role in fostering cultural exchange within the city by amplifying underrepresented voices through their monthly film screenings. A live programme of screenings programmed by REDEYE extends the exhibition to include, amongst other concerns, modular architecture, the domestic in narrative film and fiction.

Hannah Murray at Ginny on Frederick
Exhibition text ‘Murray’s artistic process begins with photographs of real friends, but once she starts painting, the figures drift from their referents. Working in oil, she draws on historical portrait techniques: a blue underpainting is followed by thin, translucent layers that slowly build the face. The blue radiates through the painted layers, giving the skin a luminescence closer to screen-glow than daylight. Her subsequent glazing smooths the features into a finish the human face rarely achieves. The skin seems to collect light like lacquer. ‘

	Hannah Tilson at Cedric Bardawell
Exhibition text ‘Fabric is never still. It folds and unfolds, endlessly turning back into itself and into the materials of the world. Italian theorist Giuliana Bruno reminds us that architecture is not only about fixed form, but about the surfaces that mediate our bodily encounter with the environment. Walls, draperies, and textures act as thresholds between inner and outer, body and world. In Staged Surfaces, Hannah Tilson’s practice moves within this porous terrain, between drawing, installation, painting, fabric, and patterns that become not separate modes but entangled threads in a meshwork of living surfaces.’

Noah Beyene at The Bridge Gallery, Paris
Exhibition text “Sweden is a nation of striking contradictions. Celebrated for its liberal ideals, social welfare, and cultural traditions, it is simultaneously grappling with the rise of the far-right Sweden Democrats, a party that has fuelled anti-immigrant sentiment. Noah Beyene was born to a Swedish mother and an Ethiopian father, and growing up in Stockholm, he never quite felt “Swedish enough”, a sense of displacement that informs the deeply reflective work presented in this exhibition.”
